Session II-  Transmission/Distribution Impacts on Renewables in NM

Faced with increasing loads and transmission lines that are at or close to capacity, utilities across the region face considerable transmission and distribution challenges; new generation will need to be brought online and managing peak loads will increasingly be a concern going forward.  Indeed, the lack of adequate transmission infrastructure is proving to be the largest impediment to renewable energy development in NM.  This session will explore the overall renewable energy development picture in NM as it pertains to transmission, ranging from federal energy issues to regional transmission plans to local Rural Electric Coop perspectives.

Moderator: Judy Stubbs, NM Economic Development Dept.

3:15 pm

 Networking and EXPO Break

3:30 pm

Session III- Community Wind, Residential Wind, Wind For Schools

While large-scale wind has been the focus of federal and state incentives, community wind is growing at a rapid pace.  These projects are typically smaller in scale and with at least partial ownership by local landowners, and have the added bonus of retaining some of the funds in local communities.  Wind systems for residences are also growing in demand. This session will discuss the value of community and residential wind, which community wind models have worked in other states, how NM can capitalize on these growing areas of wind development, and how school districts throughout the state can take advantage of their wind resources.

Moderator: Trudy Forsyth, National Renewable Energy Lab

4:45 pm

Session IV- Centralized Solar Energy

New Mexico is ranked 2nd in the nation in solar energy potential, and recently passes a production tax credit for solar energy.  Central solar plants have the ability to provide peak shaving for utilities, and thermal storage is increasing solar energy’s ability to provide energy beyond daylight hours. This session will address centralized solar technology applications for large-scale solar development.  Technologies such as Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and concentrated Photovoltaics (CPV) will be addressed.    Siting, market economics, and environmental considerations will be addressed.

Moderator: David Griscom, Regional Development Corporation

Session V- Developing and Leasing Your Land to Wind Development

New Mexico is ranked 12th in the nation in wind energy potential, and currently is in the top 10 for actual installed generation (496 MW) with several hundred more megawatts waiting to come online in the future.  Many local landowners have expressed interested in leasing their land to wind development, and developers are working closely with them to bring the wind to market.  This session will address the market trends in land leases, the potential pitfalls to avoid, legal implications of land leases, and how to start measuring your wind.

Moderator: Robert Foster, New Mexico State University

9:00 am

Session VI- Residential Solar Energy and Biomass (Dairy)

The federal and state governments have passed tax credits (30%) for residential solar electric and hot water systems, and local markets are rapidly growing as a result.  Dairy farms are expressing interest in converting waste into energy, and there are several projects underway to accomplish this. This session will address residential solar (Photovoltaic- PV) applications, solar hot water, and Biomass energy from dairy operations, and will include presentations on the various state and federal incentives for residential and commercial renewable energy development in New Mexico.

Moderator: Craig O’Hare, NM Energy, Minerals, Natural Resources Dept.

10:00 a.m.   Networking and Expo Break
$100.00 Gift Card raffle giveaway (Sponsored by Wells Fargo Bank of Albuquerque)

Session VII- Wind Technology, Development, and Economics

As wind energy continues to develop across NM and the region, interest in and knowledge of the basic technology will increase.  This session will answer all of our questions by exploring the essentials of wind energy, touching on turbine siting, environmental considerations, wind financials, and getting the wind to the market.

Moderator: Jim Morgan, Mesalands Community College
